Fiesta Choreographers Ball is back for 2012 !!

On April 20, 2012 the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre (PCEC) will be host to RED’s 3rd FIESTA – Choreographers Showcase; A biennial event that started in 2008 as a platform to give highly talented local choreographers the opportunity to showcase their talent in one big festival.

Fiesta is Perth’s only platform where the best choreographers in each genre (contemporary, flamenco, jazz, urban styles etc) are invited to showcase their talent in one big celebration of dance. Each Fiesta features an international guest choreographer – This year we are delighted to announce that Fiesta will showcase choreography from none other than KUMARI SURAJ! Kumari has choreographed for the likes of MADONNA, FLO-RIDA and SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE (USA).

2012 is starting with a bang with RED’s KUMARI SURAJ dance INTENSIVE!

Founder of “The Waackers,” “The Poison Poppies” and “The Jungle Jills,” Kumari Suraj has built a reputation in Los Angeles for being the …ISH!

This very talented dancer also produces, choreographs and puts her signature stamp on every one of her many projects. Born in San Francisco, Kumari studied ballet at 9 years old and added breakin’ and waacking lessons to complete her full arsenal of tricks and technique. Learning from of some of the pioneers of hip hop and waacking, Kumari looked up to Elite Force, Buddah Stretch and the Mop Tops.

Kumari’s first exposure to Waacking came through Tweetie, Bboy Summit 2003, Los Angeles…then on to Brian Green’s Waacking class in New York City.

Kumari is the founder of The Waackers crew in LA. She has been the catalyst for unifying and developing the Waacking community in LA, Africa, London and Denmark.

Six years into the dance Kumari Suraj has made an international name for her unique style of Waacking the world over through workshops, master classes, battles, judging and mentoring programs in North American, France, UK, Norway, Denmark, Holland, Belgium and South Africa. With over 20 years of dance experience under her belt Kumari has a vast arsenal of styles including, New Jack Swing, Vogue, House, Poppin, Locking, B-girling, Hip Hop, West African, Latin and Ballet.

Jabari Odom is an upcoming choreographer/dancer from L.A. currently touring Australia as a back up dancer for singing idol Miley Cyrus.

He got his first big break as a contestant on one of the first dancing tv contests called “Tha Wade Robson Project“, and from there the opportunities kept knocking on his door, and his dance career began to take off.

“Dancer’s of Perth Exposed” is RED’s new monthly Q&A newsletter that focuses on a special local dancer in PERTH that has inspired us in a certain way. An insight on how their dance life came about, what motivates them, and their experiences along the way.
Also, when the opportunity presents itself we will even get into the heads of some of our international teachers that have graced our Perth Workshops - to get a take on what they think of the “perth dance scene!”

WHAT IS YOUR MAIN DANCE FOCUS / STYLE?: BBoying, Funk Styles (Popping, Campblelocking)

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE DANCE EXPERIENCE? Too many to mention. If I would to pick one is going to the US in 2007 to witness b-boying in the Bronx, meet the pioneers (i.e. Frosty Freeze {R.I.P}), and see where Hip Hop was born. Travelling is the most rewarding thing about this dance and culture. Meeting people who share the same value and interest as you, and being able to connect with people around the world still awes me until today.

YOUR ADVICE TO THOSE LOOKING TO GET INTO DANCE OR THE DANCE INDUSTRY?
Don’t dance to be in the industry. Dance to have fun. Learn to dance to be able to have fun. Be a constant student. Learn your history and pay homage to those who have built the dance you learned to love.
HUMBLE YOURSELF UP! Noone is best! Its a dance not a sport!

WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE ABOUT LIFE/DANCEING EVER GIVEN TO YOU?
Remember that you started dancing because its fun. Dont let ego come to take that away from you.

WHEN YOU WATCH A DANCER, WHAT MOVES YOU THE MOST? To be able to see the music through other people’s dance. When I see a dancer hit a sound that I don’t even realise its there, it gives me goosebumps.

OTHER THAN DANCING, WHAT ELSE DO YOU LOVE TO DO? Collecting sneakers, Establish my clothing line (www.alreis.com), listen to music, research on Hip Hop culture.

WHO HAS BEEN THE MOST INFLUENTIAL IN YOUR LIFE?: My friends, family, and girlfriend.

IS THERE SOMETHING THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE ABOUT YOURSELF? No, each path i choose to take helps to create who i am. Im constantly choosing different paths and constantly changing. I guess if i would have to say one thing, then perhaps becoming a better Zen-like person.

IF YOU COULD HAVE A SUPER-POWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE, AND WHY?: To be able to fly. It would save me paying for flights for my travels all the time.

DESCRIBE THE PERTH DANCE SCENE: Perth’s dance scene in the past 2 years have grown, especially that now we’re getting more exposure, more people are willing to come down and spread the knowledge. 2011 is the year of knowledge, so it is time for us to motivate ourselves even more to build the dance scene to be much bigger.
Perth has the hunger to learn and be a force to be recognised; perhaps due to being so isolated from everywhere else.

WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THE PERTH DANCE SCENE 10 YEARS FROM NOW? AND YOUR INVOLVEMENT IN IT?  I would like Perth to be recognised not only around Australia but around the globe. “Each one teach one”. Its our duty to teach each person and spread the knowledge that we learned. I would like to keep the hip hop culture alive in Perth.

TRIP TO TAIWAN…

“I went to Taipei by myself to represent Australia and Perth in general. There’s this jam called Culture Shock that I’ve always wanted to go to since Taipei has the biggest and best dance scene in the world (even Mr Wigglez affirms that call :D).
The dance scene in Taipei is incredible. They teach from locking, rocking, wacking, popping, breaking, vogueing, house, and many other different dance styles. The scene is so incredible that it attracts so many dance pioneers and dance superstars to fly over and teach there, or to even learn from the dancers in Taipei. For example, on the day I was doing a Rock dance workshop taught by ROB NASTY (one of the best rockers in the world), next to us there’s another workshop happening at the same time. To my surprise that workshop was taught by TONY GOGO, one of the original LOCKERS.
What really amazed me was during the weekend of Culture Shock, there was another jam dedicated for the poppers, featuring guest judge POPIN PETE. That popping jam attracts roughly around 2000 people.

The dance scene in Taipei is incredible. They teach from locking, rocking, wacking, popping, breaking, vogueing, house, and many other different dance styles. The scene is so incredible that it attracts so many dance pioneers and dance superstars to fly over and teach there, or to even learn from the dancers in Taipei. For example, on the day I was doing a Rock dance workshop taught by ROB NASTY (one of the best rockers in the world), next to us there’s another workshop happening at the same time. To my surprise that workshop was taught by TONY GOGO, one of the original LOCKERS.

Roughly 100 people entered. I went all the way to the Semi Final, which was a great feeling as noone from Australia has ever gone that far in a top rock contest before.

Second day was preliminary round. It was to pick top 16 in the 3 on 3 crew and solo bboy competition. Again there were more than 100 crews and 100 individuals trying out to make it into the top 16. I made it through the top 16.

Third day was the top 16 rounds. By this day I was too tired to dance anymore, and I was eliminated in the first round, which was a shame. But as POE ONE once said “by losing you learn something and by winning you learn something..”
So overall it was another trip for knowledge and experience, as I met so many incredible dancers whom i look up to and i feel privilege to be able to learn from them.

DANCERS - BAD NEWS. OMG DANCE INTENSIVE SUNDAY IS CANCELLED.

DANCERS - BAD NEWS. OMG DANCE INTENSIVE SUNDAY (March 13th) IS CANCELLED.

We have just received notice from the dancers that their scheduled flight tonight has been cancelled due to the chaos caused by the JP earthquake (they are flying in from China so you can understand how close they are to the chaos).

They regret to advise that they will not be in Perth on Sunday to teach as a result of the flight changes. They and RED are sincerely sorry for the heartache, and inconvenience caused to you all. Monday’s classes with Flo remain the same (so come to that instead!!!!).

For those of you that have already purchased tickets via paypal your purchases will be refunded. They are being refunded as we speak.
